Proceed as follows: first determine which of the 8 principal categories the plant belongs to; then try to establish which subcategory, each one clearly illustrated, it is most likely to fit in. At this point you should come across a list of genera showing such characteristics and with the help of photographs and descriptions contained in the Cactus family  and  Photo galleries sections you might be able to determine the genus of your plant and even its species.
