Habitat: the Tropics. Description: a family of monocotyledonous plants with succulent
leaves, many of which are sprawling or climbing. The flowers consist of
three petals and three sepals and the fruits are capsules. Some 40 genera
and 500 species are included. Soil: basic mix. Location: grow in partial shade. Temperature: minimum temperature of 10°C (50°F). Water: average during the growth phase; for deciduous species wait
until new leaves emerge. Cultivation tips: suitable for indoor cultivation; propagate from
seed or cutting. Some species of Tradescantia and Zebrina are popular plants
commonly referred to as ‘spiderwort’. Main genera: Cyanotis, Tradescantia.
