Habitat:
Mexico.
Description: cacti with a globular or cylindrical green stem, apex
usually covered with wool-like hairs, conical tubercles and radial spines.
The flowers appear in the summer and open during the day. It is synonymous
with Cumarina, and sometimes with Echinocactus and
Thelocactus as well. It has now been included in Neolloydia.
Soil: basic mix.
Location: place in full sun.
Temperature: minimum temperature of 5°C.
Water: moderate.
Cultivation tips: propagate from seed, cuttings or offsets.
Main species: G. subterraneus (syn. Thelocactus, Neolloydia,
Turbinicarpus), a dwarf plant with a tuberous root that thrives in mineral
chalky soils; G.knuthianus is dwarf, globular and needs little water,
mineral soil and a minimum of about 5°C (41°F);G. beguinii, a dwarf
cactus that enjoys full sun and mineral soils; min. temp.: 5°C (41°F);G.
horripilus forms clumps and thrives in full sun and mineral soil
improved with chalk, min. temp.: 5°C (41°F); G. wiereckii.
