Habitat:
Central and
South
America, with a higher concentration in the rainforests of Brazil.
Description: the genus comprises some epiphytic species with drooping
habit that flower in late winter. It is akin to Rhipsalis.
Soil: fertile mix. It may be improved by adding a spoon of sulphur
per litre.
Location: partial shade.
Temperature:
ensure a
minimum of 8-10°C
(46-50°F).
Water: average. High levels of air humidity are beneficial, so spray
water if necessary. In the winter water once a month, taking care not to let
the soil dry out completely or part of the articles will drop.
Cultivation tips: raise from seed or cuttings in the spring. During
the growing period fertilize once every two months. They’re suitable for
hanging baskets.
Main species: H. salicornioides; H. epiphylloides.
