Habitat: Mexico, southern United States, Central America, Peru.
Description: a group of upright or sprawling cacti with basal branching; they spread by means of runner-like stems with an ascending tip. They produce roots where they touch the ground while the older parts die. According to Hunt is synonymous with Lemaireocereus. It is now considered part of Stenocereus.
Soil: mineral mix.
Location: place in full sun.
Temperature: minimum temperature of 8°C (46°F).
Water: average, but wait an additional week between two waterings. Spray water occasionally during the rest period.
Cultivation tips: slow-growing; propagate from seed or by rooting offsets. Grow in wide containers.
Main species: M. eruca, syn. Stenocereus eruca, commonly known as "desert snake” or "creeping devil". It requires very sandy soil enriched by some organic matter and a minimum temperature around 6 or 8°C (43-46°F); if kept dry it can withstand a minimum of 4°C (39°F); easy to grow and propagate by cuttings. Water normally and feed with fertilizer in the summer. Seedlings differ greatly in appearance from older plants.
