Habitat: northwestern Mexico.
Description: the genus is related to Ariocarpus and Strombocactus; the plants have a big taproot, large triangular, rosette-like tubercles with areoles on their tip. The white flowers arise in late spring from the woolly apex.
Soil: 30% leaf mould, 50% sand, 20% calcareous grit.
Location: partial shade.
Temperature: they can withstand a minimum of 5°C (41°F) in dry conditions.
Water: average.
Cultivation tips: they’re slow growing and rather difficult in cultivation. They’re easily raised from seed but cannot be grafted. They’re susceptible to winter wet, which may cause rot, and root mealy bugs.
Main species: O. denegrei, with a very large root, syn. Strombocactus d.
