Habitat: arid regions of northwestern Argentina and Bolivia.
Description: large, branching, tree-like cacti whose shape resembles that of Cereus; the stem is green at first, becoming bluish-gray with age. The tough spines also change their color to a whitish hue. The large, nocturnal flowers have a scaly tube and are borne along one side just below the apex.
Soil: basic mix.
Location: grow in full sun.
Temperature: overwinter at a minimum of 8°C (46°F). They enjoy hot summers.
Water: average.
Cultivation tips: propagate from seed or cutting; slow-growing.
